I still remember the first time I shared my story of deep hurt with a friend. I was terrified—unsure how they would respond. Would they judge me, blame me, or turn away?
But when I finally spoke, the words flowed out. My friend simply listened—with compassion, understanding, and belief. That moment was the start of my healing journey. I found the courage to open a gate that had long been closed around the pain and loss from childhood trauma.
That experience taught me one simple truth: sharing our stories changes lives.
Research shows that telling our stories is a vital part of emotional healing.
Psychologist Dr. James Pennebaker found that expressing painful experiences in words helps people make sense of emotions, reduce stress, and improve both mental and physical health.
When we share in a safe, non-judgmental space, we begin to integrate our losses instead of being defined by them. Storytelling transforms pain into purpose.
In Equine Assisted Learning (EAL), horses play a remarkable role in this process. They respond authentically to our emotions and mirror our inner state without judgment.
Studies in equine-facilitated therapy show that interacting with horses can lower stress hormones, increase self-awareness, and help people regulate emotions. When learners share their stories in the presence of horses, they often find the courage to face grief honestly and begin to release it.
Horses don’t need words—they feel truth. Their presence invites honesty, calm, and connection.
As I now help EAL Coaches guide learners through grief, I’ve seen how transformative it can be when a learner is given space to share their story. When we “open the gate” to our pain in the presence of a compassionate listener—and a horse who holds space without words—healing begins.
I know this because I’ve walked through that gate myself. And now, I get to help others do the same.
